西日はなぜ暑い
うだるような夏の午後、夕方も近いのに気温はいっこうに下がる気配も見せず、西日の差し込む部屋にいるのはうんざりです。そこを留守にしていてエアコンの付いていない部屋に帰って来たときなんかは最悪です。とかく西日は暑い!
西日さえ差さなければ夏はずっと過ごしやすいはずだ、とお思いの方も多いと思います。
実際、大学の建築学科にも設計課題の説明で、西日が暑いので開口を設けなかったり塀を立てて日差しを遮るようにした、と言う学生が必ずいます。
そのときには必ず｢どうして西日はそんなに暑いの?｣と聞いてみます。
すると大抵｢良くわからないけど暑い｣くらいの答えしか返ってきません。
大変感覚的なのです。けれども実はその感覚的という点がとても大事で、設計を仕事にするひとは、その感覚を言葉や理屈で理解しなくてはならないのです。
沈む夕陽は美しいけれど午後の西日は嫌われ者です。
なぜ、西日はそんなにも暑いのでしょうか?西日の何が悪いのでしょうか?
ただ嫌うだけでなく理由を考えてみましょう。
ひとつの不思議な結論から先に言えば西日は暑くないのです。
日本の関東地方あたりでは、と但し書きが付いたと思いますが、下記のような実験で確かめられるそうです。
立方体の家を4つの壁面がそれぞれ正しく東西南北を向くように置きます。

それでも西日は暑い、いや暑苦しい。これは紛れもない事実です。
それは先に書いた「感覚的」なことと大いに関連しています。感覚的、つまり実際体感する人にとっては西日は実に暑苦しいものです。これは間違いありません。
ではどこで上の実験結果とずれが生じるかといえば、上の実験結果は日照による受熱量だけを調べています。それに対して僕たちの身体が実際に暑いと感じるファクターは太陽からの直接の輻射熱だけではなく、気温や周辺の物からの輻射熱が大部分を占めています。
気温は日照により地表が暖められることにより上昇します。従って真昼に暖められた地表により温度ピークを迎えるのは午後2時前後になることが多いのです。 東から昇って南側を通ってゆく太陽に照らされ、太陽が西に傾く頃に気温や地表の様々な物は最大の熱量を持つことになります。暑い! そこに西日が現れま す。すると朝からその時までの日照の集積による暑さが、すべてその時出ている西日のせいにされてしまうのです。これが西日は暑い、と感じさせる一番大きな 理由です。西日が暑く感じる理由は、朝から午後のその時刻まで照りつけ続けていたそれまでの太陽の仕業の累積なのです。
その他にも理由はあります。
ひとつは時間の経過です。暑い一日を過ごして消耗し、うんざりした頃に現れるのも
西日です。弱い日差しでも身体に与える体感効果は高いのです。
もう一つはその色にあるともいえます。傾いて大気の層が厚くなるに連れ、黄色から赤と暖色系に変化する西日は暑苦しさを盛り立てます。
朝日も同じように赤いのですが、朝は気温も低く、地表に熱もたまっていないので気になりません。また、日の出を見る人も少ないのでしょう。
その、見る人が多い少ないと言うのも面白い理由のひとつです。
西日が暑いのは夏です。夏は日の出も早いので、朝の強い日差しに晒されている頃、働く街は空っぽです。家ではまだ雨戸が閉まっているかも知れません。
たとえ雨戸が開いていても気温や地表温度は高くなく朝日はさわやかです。
それに対して午後の日照は疲れた頃のオフィスや学校のガラス面をいつまでも暑苦しく照らします。西日の暑さは共通の話題でもあるからなのです。
そして人は直立しているので、上から差す日照はあまり直接認識せず、日向、日影のような｢場所｣に置き換えて理解するのに対し、横から差す西日は直接太陽 の日射しとして認識されます。角度が低く、地表を暖めることのない夕陽も、壁や立っている人には急角度で当たります。厚い大気のフィルターで弱められてい るとは言え、体には強く当たるように感じるのです。
角度が低いという同じ理由で窓から部屋の奥深く差込み、部屋を暑くするのも西日の特徴のひとつです。部屋、つまり体感環境に近いところを暖めて、かつ因果関係(つまり犯人)が見えるのも西日なのです。
そのように、西日の暑さはそれまでの日差しの結果として出来た環境を、その時に見えているもののせいにしてしまった人々の冤罪だったのです。
外は寒くても中はふわっと暖かい
冬にヨーロッパを旅行してきた人からこんな話を聞くことがあります。
｢外は凍えるほど寒いのに、部屋の中はふわっと暖かいんだ。｣
僕も冬のドイツで良くそのように感じたことがありました。室内は暖かい、と言うことなのですが｢ふわっと｣という当たりが微妙です。
東京の冬に暖かい室内に入った感覚とちょっと異なっています。
この雰囲気の差は、建物や暖房の差から来ているものです。
叙情的な旅行の思い出を壊すような説明ですが現実的で科学的な話です。
旅行中はあまり理由など考えませんし、厳寒の知らない街から暖かい部屋に入ってほっとした気持ちも手伝って特に｢ふわっと｣感じもしますが、実際的な理由があるのです。
例えば寒いドイツの街でクナイペ(居酒屋)にでも入ったとしましょう。
扉を開けたとき外の冷たい空気が室内に流れ込み、室温は少し下がるはずです。
もちろんそれでも外よりずっと暖かい、けれどなぜかふわっと暖かく感じるのは輻射熱によるものです。人の体感温度の6割くらいは輻射熱から得ていると言わ れています。ドイツのみならずヨーロッパの多くの建物は、古くは石、現在はコンクリートブロックで作られています。そうした質量の大きな建物の外側に断熱 層があるので室内の熱容量が日本の家に比べて格段に大きいのです。建物の大きな熱容量に対して、室内の空気の持つ熱容量など僅かなものです。例え窓やドア を開け放って気温が下がったとしても、室内全体の熱容量は大して変わりません。その大きな熱量に支えられた輻射がふわっと暖かく感じさせるのです。日本の 住宅は室内の熱容量が小さいので安定した熱輻射もなく、空気の熱容量の占める率も相対的に高くなっています。
当然どちらも暖房によって熱を得ているのですが、窓やドアの開け閉てのような温度変化を
促す外的な要因に対する緩衝性は熱容量の差を反映して格段の差があります。またそれだけではなく、暖房の使い方にも違いがあります。
大きな熱容量を持つ室内ですからさめ難くもありますがなかなか暖まりません。
そこでドイツ人達は少し寒くなり始める9月に暖房をつけると4月の終わり近くまで消しません。一般には低温水(60度未満)循環式の弱い暖房を用いていますが、ゆっくりたっぷり熱を室内にため込むのです。
僕が妻とドイツに渡った最初の冬はそれを知らず温度設定を最大にした暖房をつけたり消したりしていました。10月半ばに訪ねてきた大家さんが、あなたたち 何でこんな寒い部屋に住んでるの!と驚いて暖房の使い方、つまり消しちゃいけないことを教えてくれました。大きな熱容量の建物にはそれに会わせた熱供給の 方法があるのです。そうしてたっぷりと熱を貯めた室内は「ふわっと」暖かいというわけです。
日本人は室内の空気を暖めますが、ヨーロッパの人は建物を暖めます。
以前、作家のC.W.ニコルさんとの打ち合わせに何度か黒姫の家を訪ねたことがありました。
寒くなってきた秋口、部屋に帰ってきたニコルさんが｢この部屋は冷たいねえ｣と言いながら壁や机を手で触っていたことも思い出されます。
断熱層は外が良いか内が良いかという議論もそれだけでは無意味です。
ドイツの例は外断熱ですが、｢ふわっ｣は建物の蓄熱容量に支えられています。
南部ですら北海道よりずっと北極に近い地域ですから温帯の日本と比較は出来ません。
自然環境も生活の仕方も違うからです。
ほとんど蓄熱を期待出来ない木造建築も、風通しを尊ぶ日本人の暮らしも、どちらかと言えば暖かい地域に向いていると言えるでしょう。
しかし、それとは別に耐震性という観点から住宅にもRC(鉄筋コンクリート)の構造体を持つものも増え、日本人も在来の木造建築に比べてずっと熱容量の大きな建物に住むようになってきました。
そのうえ都市化と共に高密度で閉ざされた環境に住まねばならなくなりました。都市全体の熱容量も発熱量も増えています。世界の環境や残りの資源を考える と、いつまでも機械と人工的なエネルギーに頼って生活のアメニティーを確保しているようではいけないようになってきています。
アメニティーと環境について知恵を絞って考えなくてはならない時期なのです。
断熱は内か外か、等の物の仕様だけではなく、それが人の暮らしや都市の環境に具体的にどう働くのかを考えなければなりません。
そのための第一歩はすべての人が、アメニティや環境は、雰囲気や成り行きの結果出来るものではなく、現実的で科学的な理由があることを認識することが大事なのだと思います。
